1ST YEAR BOYS GAELIC SUCCESS!!
The last couple of weeks has seen some fantastic success in our school with our various school teams lining out in both football and soccer, and further achievements in both athletics and basketball also.
Back in October, our 1st year boys Gaelic team got their campaign underway with a win over Swinford in the first round of the Mayo Championship. The lads ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 9-06 to 3-06. The match represented a first chance for many of these young lads to wear the OLSS jersey and with a convincing win like that under the leadership of their captain Anthony Padden, we were excited to see how the next few games played out.
The team were back in action later in the month when they met Davitt College. The lads came out on top on a scoreline of 5-10 to 5-09. We started the game brightly and raced to an early lead, only to be pegged back by a determined Castlebar side. In the end, with some fantastic defending and no shortage of effort, we prevailed by the narrowest of margins! This win made it 3 from 3 for the OLSS boys in the Mayo Championship.
The success for this team continued when on the 3rd of December, they captured the 1st Year Post Primary Cup by defeating St. Tiernan’s College, Crossmolina. The game took place at the Connacht Centre of Excellence and what a superb game it was. Both sides were unbeaten this year in the lead up to the final and there was very little between the two teams on the day.
The game began frantically with both sides exchanging some excellent early scores. OLSS began to take control during the middle third of the game, but Tiernan’s managed to claw their way back into the match as we approached the closing stages.
Thankfully, our lads managed to find an extra gear in the final minutes of the game and claimed a memorable victory! Pictured below is the team captain on this occasion, Harry Padden, accepting the cup. Overall, this was a real team effort, and we are so proud of the determination shown by our young players. A special mention goes to Mr Upton, Mr O’Donoghue, and Michael Joe Barrett for their tireless work with this team since September. Well done to all.
